Tibbitts as requested and to adopt the said resolution as amended. The Mayor put the question and the Clerk called the roll with the following result: Ayes; Aldermen Carroll, Johnson, Henrich, Loos, Dopheide, uarlson, Friott, Lemke, Schwanbeck and Campagna. The Mayor thereupon declared the motion carried and the resolution adopted as amended. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Each member of the Council having been sup- plied with a copy of the minutes of the regular Uouncil meeting held Monday, July 24, 1939, the motion was made by Alderman Carroll, and seconded by Alderman Jchwanbeck to approve the said minutes as presented. The motion was voted upon by acclamation whereupon the Mayor declared the motion car- ried and the said minutes approved. FILLING KATION DRIVEWAYS DANGEROUS: Alderman Loos called the Council's attention7the hazard created by permitting an unnecessarily wide expanse of driveways to filling stations, and permitting cutting away too much curb at such driveways, especially at corners. He cited the Standard Oil Station on the northeast corner of Lee Street and Prairie Avenue as a typical example of such a hazard. The motion was made by Alderman Loos and seconded by Alderman Dopheide to refer this matter to the Streets and Qidewalks Committee for investigation, and report at the next regular meeting of the Council. The motion was voted upon by acclamation where- upon the Mayor declared the motion carried. MOTOR -SCOOTER & BICYCLE HAZARDS: Upon the request of Alderman Loos, Mayor Ahbe referred to the Police Committee the matter of abating the hazards created by careless bicycle and motor -scooter riders, many of whom ride after dusk without lights. TRAFFIC HAZARDS AT MINER STREET & DES PLAINES AVE: Upon the request of Alderman Loos, Mayor Ahbe referred to the Streets & Sidewalks Committee the matter of proper signing at Des Plaines Avenue and Miner Street to prevent numberous "left turn violation by drivers coming west on Miner St. and turning left to proceed southward on Des Plaines Avenue; also the matter of studying the "stop and go" traffic control light at the southwest corner of Des Plaines Avenue and Miner street with a view toward a better control of traffic at that point. ASKS C00PERATION IN WEED CUTTING: Alderman Dopheide publicly ap- pealed to the press asking that the press seek the cooperation of the public in cutting weeds, especially on vacant lots. ADJOURNMENT: The motion was made by Alderman Schwanbeck and seconded by Alderman Lemke that the Council adjourn. ASK TO APPOINT RELIEF FIREMAN: The motion was made by Alderman Dopheide chairman of the Fire Committee to instruct the Clerk to give written notice to the Fire and Police Commission to appoint a relief fireman from its eligibility list for firemen. The following letter was then read by the Clerk: CUMBERLAND MAINTENANCE CORPORATION August 17, 1939 City Council Des Plaines, Illinois Gentlemen: Your attention is respectfully called to the following resolution passed at a meeting on August 15th o f the Board of Directorsof the Cumberland Maintenance Corporation regarding petition to an- nex Cumberland East to Des Plaines: "Pursuant to resolution passed by a meeting on August 10 of member of the Cumberland Maintenance, which enjoys a paid membership of 90/ of residents in Cumberland, the Board of Directors conveys the following resolution to the City Council of Des Plaines and to the Federal Housing Adminis- tration district office at Chicago. dHEREAS there is a petition before the City Council by H.M. Cornell to annex to the City a subdivision identified as Cumberland East, and WHEREAS it is understood that improvements are expected to be petitioned regarding streets and connection into existing city water mains and combination storm and sanitary sewers in Cumberland, and WHEREAS this combination storm and sanitary sewers, paid by special assessments spread over Cumberland alone, has proven inadequate to handle storm sewerage without experiencing back- flow of sanitary sewerage into basements even in the present incompletely developed state of Cumberland properties, there- for be it RESOUVED that the Cumberland Maintenance Corporation hereby recommends to the Des Plaines City Council approval of the annexation of Cumberland East, however, with the reservation that any petition covering connections of any sanitary or storm sewers to the existing Cumberland sewers be refused on the basis of inadequate present capacity of the existing sewer system. C & NW. CROSSING AT DES PLAINES AVENUE: Alderman Loos asked that the Clerk write the C & NW Railroad requesting that the crossing at Des Plainesbe satisfactorily repaired.
