DES PLAINES BUSINESS ME1I'S ASSN.
May 3,1937
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
Gity.of Des Plaines
Gentlemen:
We have just learned of the contemplated
erection of a store building on the corner of Lee and
Ellinwood Streets that will extend over the present
established building line. five feet.
Since this affects two of the major premises
on which this organization was founded we want to voice
our protest to this plan.
First of all - we are trying in every way to
beautify the business section of our city with a planting
of shrubbery and trees along the railroad right-of-way and
in other ways beautify the city business district. The
erection of this store five feet beyond the building line
will detract from rather than enhance the city's appearance.
Secondly - we are trying to alleviate the congestion
now present in the parking and pedestrian situation in our
business section during some times during the shopping week.
with the recent widening of Lee Street the sidewalks had to
be narrowed considerably. To build this store out five feet
would narrow the sidewalk at this point to a lesser width
than now exists on Center Street. Center Street is very
congested on Saturdays and special shopping days.
We hope the Council will not see its way clear to
pass on the plan of this building as it now exists at 90
feet in width. shank you.
Very truly yours
