Mays,AThe Mayor pro -tem thereupon declared the motion carried. lionee STATEMENT' FROM RESIDENT ENGINEER INSPECTOR:Upon the request of Alderman MacLuckie, Mr. G.R.Robie, .Y[.A.Resident Engineer Inspector consented to make a brief statement regarding the structural progress of the Reservoir and Softening Plant. He stated that the progress being made is very satisfactory. SEWER GAS ON NORTH SIDE: Alderman Carroll then reported that a strong sewer 'gas odor is being emitted from sevema1 north -side sewer openings. The Mayor pro -tem referred this matter to the Sewer,Drainage and Sanitation Committee after which Alderman Lemke, chairman of the committee reported that this odor would be eliminated by means of flushing the sewers in question. PURCHASE OF "IRON CLAW" FOR POLICE: Alderman Pulte, chairman of the Police and License Committee then intro- duced Er. Stange who demonstrated the "Iron Claw" for police work. After the demonstration the motion was made by Alderman Carroll and seconded by Schwanbeck to authorize the police Committee to properly equip the Police with "Iron Claws" and to refer this matter to the Police Committee with full power to act. The motion was voted upon by acclamation whereupon the Mayor pro -tem declared the motion unanimously carried. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The motion was made by Alderman Bisliop and seconded by r'flughaupt to approve the minutes of the regular Council meeting held June 1,1936 as written. The motion was voted upon by acclamation whereupon the Mayor pro -tem declared the motion carried and the said minutes approved. P.W.A.PROJECT NO.72703 Kenneth G.i eyer, City Attorney 'stated that it seems as though Divane Bros. may be willing to proceed with their electrical contract on P.W.A.Project No.7270 provided the city agrees to pay them an additional ;300.00 to cover the increase in labor cost caused by delay, and asked whether there is any objection to attempting to make such an agreeue:t. A11 aldermen present expressed their consent, although no formal action was taken by the Council regarding the matter. Special Assessment Diversion Suits: Kenneth G. Meyer, City Attorney, reported that an offer has been made by the attorneys for the Cedar Rapids Life Insurance Co. to settle acrued interest in the case of the Cedar Rapids Life Insurance Co. vs. the City of Des Plaines by giving the City a concession of six months interest, and asked the Council's consent to such a settlement. By general consent the Council urged the City Attorney to proceed as reported. However, no formal motion was passed regarding this matter. PARKWAYS -DRIVEWAYS AND OBSTRUCTIONS THEREON: Alder- man Frederick, chairman of the Streets and Sidewalks Committee, then raised the question of the rights of residents regarding parkways as well as the City's powers over such parkways with respect to driveway and obstructions thereon. The motion was made by Alderman Carroll and seconded by Ahbe to refer this ciuestion to the Streets and Sidewalks Committee for re- commendation at the next regular Council meeting. however, an amendment was offered by Alderman 1&acLuckie and seconded by Frederick that the matter be also referred to the City Attorney for an opinion. The amendment was voted upon by acclamation whereupon the Mayor declared the amendment carried. This report covers the period from June 1,1935 to _This 28, 1936. The coal burned during this time vvas 89.25 tons or one pound of coal per twenty-four and three -tenths pounds of garbage burned. All indications up to the present time show that we will use less fuel per ton of garbage burned in the future, due to the dry wather we have had for the past three months.
