12/18/1978 Public Hearing137. MINUTES OF THE PUBLIC HEARING' FOR THE PROPOSED USE OF REVENUE SHARING FUNDS FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 1979 HELD MONDAY, December 18, 1978 Mayor Volberding opened the Public Hearing at 6:45 P.M., stating that the estimated amount of unappropriated entitlement funds at January 1, 1979 is $163,994 and the amount of entitlement funds which the City of Des Plaines expects to receive in the fiscal year of 1979 is $643,685. He then called on those present for their comments and suggestions. Ms. Julie Sass, of the Minority Information Center, 770 Lee Street explained briefly the activities of the Minority Information Center and submitted program documents to Mayor Volberding. She stated that the Minority Information Center has been in existence since 1973 and is a tax-exempt not for profit agency. She requested that the City Council consider this agency for funding in the 1979 Revenue Sharing Budget. Ms. Julie Sass, speaking for Life -Span, Box 204, Park Ridge, Illinois, described the agency as a new organization that has come about and for which a dire need exists to find support systems for women who are battered. This agency provides shelter, community education, and staffing for the crisis line. The agency has just received funding from the H. V. Fuller &Co. but is seeking funding from municipal or township governments to meet their needs for services. There were no specific amounts requested in either of the above requests for funding. Ms. Caroll Saloman, President of the League of Women Voters stated that their membership is evenly divided on the use of Federal Revenue Sharing Funds and therefore has reached no position. Therefore, they will not be testifying at this meeting. Hearing closed at 7:05 P.M. In addition to Mayor Volberding, the following were present at the Public Hearing: City Comtroller Blietz, City Engineer Bowen, Fire Chief Gedroic, Alderman Ward, Alderman Birchfield, and those who testified.
