BUILDING CODE REVISION: Alderman Blume made the following report: "Your Committee
on Building Control'and Inspection has investigated the above and has found our
present Building Code of'1939 as amended with the Suburban Building Code does not
offer sufficient regulation for the construction of multiple'living units, stores,
offices and factories. It is also difficult to interpret and is not up to date
at the present time. The Architectual Commission in a letter to the Council
attached, agrees unanimously that there is a great. need for a more modern com-
prehensive code. After careful evaluation of many. standard building codes and
the requirements of the city of Des Plaines,. we believe that the "Modern Standard
Building Code," Vol. 1, 1959 edition, including all suppliments, as compiled by
the Midwest Conference of Building Officials, meets all the future needs of our
rapidly expanding city, and will afford our building department the most practical
and enforceable building code for this climatic area. We, your Committee on
Building Control and Inspection therefore recommend that the City Attorney be
instructed to draw an ordinance repealing the present building code of 1939 as
amended, excepting that portion relating to single family residential buildings
only, as covered by the Suburban Building Code, April, 1957. Edition; and that
the same ordinance also establish the Modern Standard Building Code, heretofore
